Spring classic 6: Classic Brugge – De Panne

This beautiful cycling race on the beautiful Belgian coast should not be missed. The course is characterized by the danger of “fanning”. The cycling splendor of Bruges - De Panne continues on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 and starts on the Grote Markt in Bruges.

Belgian course with a rich history

The Classic Brugge-De Panne, launched in 1934, is a Belgian cycling race with a rich history. Over the years it has consolidated its status as a UCI World Tour event, and since 2012 there has also been an elite women's edition. Until recently, the competition was organized by Royal Veloclub Het Vliegend Wiel vzw. The organization is now in the hands of Golazo.

The wind, the nuts and 3 local rounds in De Panne

The challenging course no longer starts in Ghent since 2003, but on the Grote Markt in Bruges. The race retained its appeal with features such as the Kemmelberg, a cobblestone climb that had to be climbed twice.

However, we have not driven to Heuvelland since 2020. The course is now characterized by West Flemish cobblestones, dunes and marshes where the wind, characteristic of the coast, often became the determining factor. The 2024 edition ends in De Panne with 3 local laps of 43.9km. It promises to be a spectacle again with the variation in surfaces and technical sections.

Jasper Philipsen wins the Brugge De Panne edition in 2023 after being rained out

In a flat race over 218.2 kilometers, riders do everything they can to succeed Tim Merlier as champion of the Classic Brugge-De Panne. The big question remains whether the windy De Moeren will cause fans or whether the race will end in a bunch sprint.

The route remains virtually identical, with a decisive final circuit of 45.1 kilometers around Veurne and De Panne, which is completed three times. The windy roads of De Moeren traditionally provided crucial moments in 2023 with fans and an escaped leading group of 4 riders.

Last year, an exciting sprint finish by a leading group of 4 ensured Jasper's victory, only a fraction faster than Olav Kooij.

Recent Adjustments: In 2020, the start returned to Ypres, and in 2017 the so-called Plug Streets were added, in memory of the Christmas Truce in 1914.

Victory for Christophe Laporte after solo of 2 Jumbos in 2023

Spring classic No. 9: Across Flanders

The ninth spring classic, Dwars door Vlaanderen, will take place on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. The competition takes place in the Flemish landscape, with the finish in Waregem, West Flanders.

Dwars Door Vlaanderen – A classic among the races in Flanders since 1945

Dwars door Vlaanderen, previously known as Dwars door België until 1999, has a rich history since the first edition in 1945. It grew into a one-day race for men and since 2012 also includes an edition for elite women. The race used to mark the start of the Flemish Cycling Week, with a prominent place in the spring calendar alongside other classics.

Straight through Flanders Distinctive Trail

In 2018, the race was moved to the Wednesday before the Tour of Flanders, which was accompanied by major changes to the route. The distance was limited, and new slopes were added, including the Berg ten Houte. In 2022, the organization added more unknown slopes to distinguish itself from other spring classics and the dangerous descent of the Stationsberg was removed from the course.

This year, Dwars Door Vlaanderen will start again at Stationsplein in Roeselare. The course unfolds via Tiegemberg for a total of 12 slopes and 8 cobblestone sections. This makes the Dwars Door Vlaanderen classic also a serious challenge with a total of 188 km. The meet is located at the Stadium on the Verbindingsweg in Waregem.

More than a sporting spectacle, the Tour is a popular festival, with fans along the way and a unique atmosphere. With a century of history, the Tour of Flanders remains a cherished monument and ongoing celebration of Flemish cycling.

As part of the UCI World Tour, The Tour of Flanders contributes to the prestige of professional cycling. The race attracts worldwide attention and brings together the best riders to battle for victory in this illustrious classic.

Tadej Pogacar, the towering favorite, wins De Ronde in 2023

Paris-Roubaix is one of the five monuments and has been part of the UCI World Tour since 2011.

Cycling classic 12: Amstel Gold Race

The Amstel Gold Race, an annual Dutch cycling classic, enchants the Limburg hills with its epic course. Both men and women compete in this spectacle that starts at the Vrijthof in Maastricht and ends on the Rijksweg in Vilt. With its rich history and challenging routes, the Amstel Gold Race is a highlight in spring cycling.

Amstel Gold Race – Gilbert's Favorite race

The Amstel Gold Race, an annual highlight in the spring since 1966, had its origins thanks to cycling team leaders Ton Vissers and Herman Krott. Over the years the race has had several nicknames, including “Amstel Gold Raas” during Jan Raas' five-time victory and later “Monsieur Cauberg” or “Amstel Gilbert Race” after Philippe Gilbert's four victories. The race has been part of the UCI World Tour since 2011.

The Amstel is the only Dutch race that we have included in our list of spring classics. In 2023, Flanders Classics took over the organization of this Dutch cycling classic.

The Amstel has a tough course with 33 climbs and 254km long.

Parcours Amstel Gold Race 2024: Challenge in Limburgse Heuvels

The Amstel Gold Race 2024 starts at the Vrijthof in Maastricht and ends on the Rijksweg in Vilt, 2 km past the Cauberg summit, the same location as the Cycling World Championships in 2012. The men's course covers 253.6 km, divided into four loops, while the ladies ride 156 km, with one large loop and four local circuits.

It is striking that the Cauberg is no longer in the last loop of the men. The climbs include a total of 33 for men and 21 for women, with tough final climbs such as Kruisberg, Eyserbosweg, Fromberg, Keutenberg, Cauberg, Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg. These challenges also promise a tough final for the riders in 2024.

Spring classic number 13: The Flèche Wallonne

The Walloon Arrow – La Flèche Wallonie is a spring classic from Charleroi to Huy. The legendary finale is about the Muur Van Huy. The organization is in the hands of ASO and will take place this year on Wednesday, April 17.

Walloon Cycling Classic since 1936

The Flèche Wallonne (La Flèche Wallonne) is a Belgian cycling classic that has been held in Wallonia since 1936. Since 1998 there has also been a women's race.

The race was originally part of the Ardennes cycling weekend with Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Now it belongs to the UCI World Tour, organized by Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), known for the Tour de France.

The finish has been in Huy since 1983, with the infamous Wall of Huy as the executioner. The steep slope determines the outcome of this challenging classic.

200km long and hilly course

With no fewer than 9 climbs and 200 km long, the Flèche Wallonne course is one of the most challenging in the series of spring classics. The final is about the legendary Wall of Huy with a length of 1.4km, average gradient of 9.4% with peaks up to 17% (!!).

La Doyenne – cycling legend founded in 1892.

Liège-Bastogne-Liège, nicknamed “La Doyenne,” is a cycling classic with a rich history since 1892. As the oldest spring classic and part of the five Monuments of cycling, it has an iconic status. During the 1950s and 1960s, it formed the Ardennes cycling weekend together with the Flèche Wallonne.

The 1980 edition, ridden in almost complete snow, is memorable. In 1989, Liège-Bastogne-Liège was joined by the Tour de France. The course, originally varying in finish locations, now has Ans as a permanent finish location. Since 2011 it has been part of the UCI World Tour.
